Ocean Freight FCL vs LCL: Which Suits Your Cargo?

Basic Definitions

FCL (Full Container Load): You rent an entire container exclusively for your merchandise. Ideal for volumes over 15 CBM.

LCL (Less than Container Load): You share a container with other importers. You only pay for the space (volume/weight) your cargo occupies.

When to choose LCL?

  • Importing small quantities (e.g., 1 to 10 pallets).
  • Testing a new market or supplier.
  • Your cargo is not extremely fragile and doesn't require exclusive filling.

When to choose FCL?

  • High volume (over 15 CBM or very heavy cargo).
  • You want to avoid extra handling at ports (reducing damage).
  • You need slightly faster transit times by avoiding deconsolidation.
